Vijay’s TVK set to form government in Tamil Nadu after 2026 polls

Vijay’s TVK set to form government in Tamil Nadu after 2026 polls

New Delhi: Amidst the election results from five states, the name 'Thalapathy' is resonating loudly. Thalapathy Vijay, the superstar of South Indian cinema, has taken everyone by surprise in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Before the polls, when Thalapathy announced his intention to enter the electoral fray by forming a new party, many people at the time did not take it seriously. Many viewed it merely as an attempt to carve out a niche in politics in Tamil Nadu, relying solely on the strength of his fan base. At that time, hardly anyone could have predicted that, in the days to come, it would indeed be 'Thalapathy' who would emerge victorious. Tamil Nadu has a history of electing film stars as political leaders. While stalwarts like MGR and Jayalalithaa established their dominance as Chief Ministers, leaders such as Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth did not meet with similar success. Against this backdrop, a major question arises: how, exactly, did Thalapathy succeed?

Not Just a Profession: Thalapathy Vijay Delivered a Clear Message

In 2024, when Thalapathy Vijay founded his party, the TVK, he delivered a clear message right from the start: "For me, politics is not merely a profession." This very stance proved to be the key to Vijay's success. Vijay assured his admirers that he was serious about his political ambitions and that his entry into politics was not merely an experiment. He put his highly successful career on the line to pursue this path. From the very beginning, Vijay ruled out any possibility of an alliance with Tamil Nadu's two major political parties: the DMK and the AIADMK. This strategic decision helped Vijay position himself as a distinct alternative, projecting a clean and untainted public image. This not only provided ideological clarity to his party, TVK, but was also warmly received by young voters.

What Did Vijay Do Differently from Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth?

Today, as the results were declared on May 4th, the reasons behind 'Thalapathy' Vijay's victory are being analyzed. What did Vijay do differently compared to Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth? Why did Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan fail? Southern superstar Rajinikanth entered politics after dropping hints about doing so for a decade, yet he met with failure without even contesting an election. He failed to convince voters that he would remain a relevant and formidable force in the long run. Kamal Haasan's party contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, but the party's performance remained extremely lackluster. When Rajinikanth stepped into politics, he was over 70 years old; Haasan was over 65. In contrast, Thalapathy's relatively younger age also worked in his favor.

Thalapathy Vijay Emerges as a 'People's Leader' in His Very First Election

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and his party had centered their entire election campaign around anti-Hindi sentiments and Dravidian identity—a strategy that was rejected by the people of the state. Conversely, Thalapathy Vijay's TVK appealed to Tamil Nadu's voters by championing Tamil pride while raising slogans against corruption and youth unemployment, and calling for change. Consequently, votes from urban areas, the youth, and the middle class gravitated toward Vijay's party. The brand of politics that had long prevailed in Tamil Nadu has now come to a definitive halt. Actor Vijay—who announced his full-time entry into politics—has emerged as a true 'Jananayak' (People's Leader) in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, much like the title of one of his films.
