External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar recently renewed India's commitment to facilitation for the legitimate return of undocumented Indian nationals living abroad. Quoting Jaishankar, this is concerning the issue of immigration and the status of Indian citizens abroad who said that this government is committed to the well-being of its citizens but could not neglect international law and norms.
Speaking at the recent event, Jaishankar said that "India has always been open to the legitimate return of its undocumented nationals, provided such cases align with due processes and bilateral agreements." In this regard, he emphasized the fact that miscommunication, exploitation, or an ignorance of a proper legal procedure of migration cause undocumented migration.
Cooperating with the Countries
The Indian Government has proactively reached out to nations with whose sovereign borders are posed the undocumented Indian nationals. Jaishankar underlined the need to collaborate with the foreign governments to address the issue responsibly. He also emphasized the commitment of India in providing the necessary assistance for Indian nationals abroad, especially during legal and humanitarian challenges.
Over the years, India has entered into numerous bilateral agreements with various nations to facilitate the repatriation of undocumented citizens. These treaties ensure that the repatriation is very transparent, humane, and abides by both international and domestic laws.
He agreed that undocumented migration is complex as most people are migrating under false pretenses or beyond their visa limit. He further called for raising awareness about the legal process of migration and risks of undocumented migration such as exploitation by human traffickers and legal problems abroad.
Support for Indian Diaspora
The minister again avowed that the government was committed to the Indian diaspora. "We continue to have an intense commitment to the safety and dignity of all Indians overseas," he said. Jaishankar also asked the Indians to follow the immigration rules of the country where they are staying so that no legal complications arise.
The government's approach is in line with its overall strategy of strengthening ties with the Indian diaspora while protecting their interests. Efforts include streamlining repatriation processes, raising awareness about lawful migration, and cracking down on networks that facilitate illegal immigration.
Jaishankar’s remarks come at a time when global discussions on migration are becoming increasingly significant. His statement highlights the importance of responsible migration policies and India’s readiness to address the challenges posed by undocumented migration.
By ensuring a balance between protecting its citizens and upholding international obligations, India seeks to maintain its reputation as a responsible global player in managing migration issues.
