Singapore: Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's People's Action Party (PAP) has won a spectacular victory in the general elections held in Singapore on Saturday. PAP registered a landslide victory by winning 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats. Local media gave this information. Wong and PAP have got a new mandate from the general elections amid uncertainties in the global economy due to US trade tariffs. Singapore's oldest and largest political party PAP has ruled here since independence in 1965.
After the results of Marsiling-Yew Tee Group Representation Constituency (GRC) were announced, Wong said that this was his first and "humbling experience". He vowed to work hard for the voters. Wong (52) said, "We are grateful for your strong mandate and ... will honor the trust you have given us by working even harder for all of you."
Wong passed the test
This election was seen as the first important test for Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who took office last year. He is leading the PAP, which has been ruling Singapore since independence. The Election Department (ELD) here said that Singapore voters voted for 92 out of 97 parliamentary seats at 1,240 polling stations to decide the future political picture of the country. There are 27,58,846 registered voters in the country.
PAP in power since independence
This was the 19th general election in Singapore since the first general election in 1948. The island country got independence in 1965 and this was the 14th general election since then. The PAP has been in power in the country since independence. Wong (52) was sworn in as the new Prime Minister in May last year. He assumed this post after Lee Hsien Loong left the post of Prime Minister after almost two decades.
According to the news of channel 'News Asia', voting in Singapore officially ended at 8 pm local time. With this, the voting which lasted for 12 hours in the 14th general election of the country was completed.
