New Delhi: Brazil is a vocal critic of Donald Trump's policies. The Lula da Silva government has openly opposed Trump's decisions. But most importantly, the Brazilian president has consistently emphasized strong relations with India. Amidst this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again spoken with the Brazilian president, who has defied the US. PM Modi spoke with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The two leaders reviewed the progress made in the India-Brazil strategic partnership.
Lula and PM Modi also emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation for the Global South. Modi also told Lula that he hopes Lula will participate in the AI Summit during his upcoming visit to India. Last year, amidst the tariff dispute with the US, Lula had said that he would visit India in early 2026. PM Modi said that he is looking forward to welcoming the Brazilian president. Lula will visit India from February 19 to 21. During the 45-minute conversation between PM Modi and Lula, the two leaders resolved to work together for UNSC reforms and reiterated their commitment to peace in Gaza and multilateralism.
Happy to have spoken with Lula - Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself shared this information on social media. He said that he was happy to have spoken with President Lula. We reviewed the strong momentum in the India-Brazil strategic partnership, which is poised to reach new heights in the coming year. Our close cooperation is crucial for advancing the shared interests of the Global South. I look forward to welcoming him to India soon. Lula levels serious accusation against Trump
It's worth noting that, like India, the Trump administration also imposed a 50% tariff on Brazil last year following a diplomatic spat between the two countries. Neither country has yet accepted President Donald Trump's invitation to join his peace initiative aimed at ending the Gaza conflict and ensuring lasting peace. Lula, a vocal critic of Trump's tariff policies, accused the US president this week of trying to rule the world through social media.
