Defense agreement signed between Sri Lanka and India
After the bilateral meeting in Colombo, Prime Minister Modi also virtually inaugurated the Sampur Solar Power Project with President Disanayake. Let us tell you that Disanayake became the President of Sri Lanka last year and Prime Minister Modi is the first foreign leader to visit Sri Lanka after he assumed office. Earlier, on Saturday, the Prime Minister was given an unprecedented formal welcome at Colombo's Independence Square in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has given this honor to a guest dignitary for the first time, making it historic and a symbol of deepening relations between the two neighbors.
In a post on X by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, it was said that "Special welcome at the grand Independence Square of Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Independence Square in Colombo. Bilateral discussions will be held to promote partnership for the common future and mutual prosperity of our people." This welcome has given importance to the beginning of the visit focused on promoting regional cooperation and rapidly advancing joint development projects.
Why is the grand welcome of Prime Minister Modi special?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded a grand ceremonial welcome at the historic Independence Square in the heart of Sri Lanka's capital Colombo on Saturday. This is the first such honour given to any foreign leader. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake welcomed the Prime Minister at the square. Prime Minister Modi arrived in Colombo yesterday evening after finishing his visit to Bangkok. There he participated in the summit of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation). Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said on X that "President Dissanayake accorded a ceremonial welcome to Prime Minister Modi at Independence Square in Colombo." Officials said this was the first time a foreign leader was accorded such a warm welcome at Independence Square.
Prime Minister Modi's visit to Sri Lanka is taking place at a time when the island nation is recovering from an economic crisis. Three years ago, Sri Lanka was reeling under a severe economic crisis and India had provided it with financial assistance of US$ 4.5 billion. After talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Dissanayake, it is believed that India will provide assistance to Sri Lanka on debt restructuring and an important agreement will also be reached between the two countries on currency exchange.
