‘Time to Speak for Hindus’: Mithun’s Attack on Mamata Sparks Political Shift in Bengal

Kolkata: Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty is concerned about the condition of Hindus in West Bengal. Mithun, who was once associated with the Naxal movement, got so influenced by Hindutva after joining BJP that he does not miss an opportunity to openly criticize Mamata Banerjee, the leader of his old party TMC. He makes such statements on Hindus and Hindutva that his opponents get irritated. He also does the math of votes from a new perspective according to political equations. With this attitude of his, BJP has got another vocal celebrity in Bengal, who has kept the flag of Hindutva high. How did this change come in Mithun, who went from being a staunch leftist to the new face of Hindutva?

The new trio of Suvendu, Sukanto and Mithun

After Suvendu Adhikari and Sukanto Majumdar in West Bengal, Mithun is the only leader who openly talks about Hindutva. In his journey from Naxalbari to saffron-clad, the actor-politician also expressed his opinion on the Murshidabad violence. He said that Bengali Hindus became homeless after the violence. They do not have a roof over their heads and are forced to eat khichdi. He also expressed concern over the target attack on Hindu businessmen during the violence. Earlier, a statement of Mithun was also in the news, in which he had said that the Mamata Banerjee government has to be bid farewell from West Bengal. Ramrajya will come here only when the 9 percent Hindus who do not step out of their homes during voting will also vote for him.

He turned to acting after his brother's death

According to reports, Mithun Chakraborty was a supporter of the Naxal movement during his college days. He also had relations with the militant Naxal leader Charu Majumdar. During a Naxalite operation, his brother died due to electric shock. His father advised him to leave Kolkata. He separated from the Naxalite group and moved towards the world of acting. After doing an acting course at FTII, Pune, he came to Mumbai in the seventies. After this, he created the image of a superstar in Hindi and Bengali films. For two decades, Mithun was known as a leftist supporter and he had a good relationship with the CPM government of Bengal.

Close to CPM, also remained in TMC

In 2011, the power changed in West Bengal and Mamata Banerjee became the Chief Minister. Mithun Chakraborty also joined TMC in 2014 and became a Rajya Sabha MP. He was criticized a lot due to his low attendance in Parliament and in 2016, Mithun resigned from the Rajya Sabha. About five years later, before the Bengal Assembly elections in March 2021, Mithun Chakraborty joined the BJP. After joining the BJP, verbal attacks have started on Mithun Chakraborty. TMC MP Saugata Roy said that Mithun Bollywood star was originally a Naxalite and has changed parties four times. Roy alleged that Mithun joined BJP out of fear of getting caught in ED cases. He has no credibility and no influence among the people.

Described Mamata as a threat to Hindutva

After wearing saffron robes, Mithun became a critic of Mamata Banerjee and a supporter of Hindutva. Recently, one of his statements was very popular, which was criticized by TMC. He had said that if BJP does not come to power in 2026, it will become difficult for Hindus to live in Bengal. After the Murshidabad violence that erupted during the protest against the Waqf Act, Mithun called Mamata Banerjee a threat to Hindus. Accusing TMC of inciting communal tension, he said that Hindus are being mistreated in Bengal. Now he has demanded assembly elections amid President's rule. He said that Hindus have started uniting in Bengal and now no one can save Mamata Banerjee.
